Hana and Tova, hooray!
There is nothing sweeter than a newborn baby, except when you know that baby and her name is Tova and she's the daughter of one of your most favorite teachers, ever! That's how it goes and how it went, yesterday, when Hana Baker and her brand new (well, a month new) daughter visited the school for a check-in. The students could barely contain their excitement while awaiting her arrival - who let that cat out of the bag?! The anticipation was almost too much for some of us.....and then they arrived and life was beautifully full of love and happiness again. Oh, we miss you, Hana Baker! We're also so proud of you and Tyler, it's going to be FUN watching little Tova grow and grow.

School is a buzz!
The fall days of warm sunshine, bright blue skies and amazing foliage make outdoor education days even better than usual.....when all things go according to plan, that is. Wednesday morning began with a frantic call to Luke (aka Diesel God). Luckily Luke makes house (or in this case, school) calls and came to the rescue, outfitting Big Blue with a new battery in time for the Younger Crew's departure to Sunny Pine Farm. Thanks to Cara, Joe, and Luke for finding a solution! Sunny Pine Farm is home to farmer, goat herder and cheese maker (as well as alumni parent) Ed Welch, and a vast assortment of other two and four legged family members. Samples of delicious goat's milk and creamy cheese were tried by all - yum!
Big Blue, ready to roll again this morning, set off with a full load of Middle Crew members to hike and explore the Cutthroat Lake area. Peter Neitlich and Bridget Hall are along on the day to explore the wonders of natural science.
Sending good energy and well wishes to crewmate, Nate Hirsch, the Older Crew sings along to Luc and the Lovingtons playing on the radio (Nate will be performing with the band and Jason Mraz tonight....somewhere in the Midwest....) Emily Post is helping Deirdre and the students craft their ceramic mugs, the challenge this year - to construct 3-D faces on the mugs. Thanks to the Almquists for generously donating the clay and firing the glazed mugs!

School has begun, again......
September has been a month filled with re-connecting, meeting new and taking on adventures in an ever-strengthening community of learners. Wet and chilly fall weather was the perfect fit for the first week of school, helping kids and teachers settle into indoor routines and the structures of school life after a freedom-filled summer. Bright, sunshine filled days replaced low clouds and rain, just in time for overnight adventures on Whidbey Island and Lost River. Our youngest crew members have been busy as bees, learning songs, chants, animal stories - taking in the wonders of a new, big school.
Crew rooms are filled with "Shared Visions" and "Codes of Conduct", created by the students, to help guide and inspire them throughout the year. Parents, board members and staff members add to the process to create overarching shared philosophy and values by which to live.
A special thanks to new volunteers, both parent and community-based - we are off to a great start and look forward to sharing the adventure with you!

The Younger Crew, just back from gifting squash plants to Classroom in Bloom and planting them with the kindergarten classes at MVE.....piled out of the old white van and danced with glee as the radio blared. Good parking lot fun in the sunshine (of which we've not seen much these past few weeks!). School is winding down......

On Tuesday the Younger Crew welcomed Wenatchee Tribal Elder, Matthew Dicks, to their classroom. Matthew shared stories from his mother and grandmother as well as parts of a documentary he has created about his people.
Matthews visit was a perfect compliment to the legend writing and art projects being finalized by this energetic groups of learners. They are eager to share their learning and accomplishments with friends and family at Young Authors' Night, May 26th at 5:30.

Thanks to everyone who attended yesterday's important meeting at the MV Elementary School. MVCS's proposal to form a partnership with the public school district is one that has inspired thought provoking conversation, great questions and served as a reminder of the potential of our amazing valley community.
If you are interested in knowing more about the partnership proposal, please visit the MVCS website where you will find a link to a comprehensive Q&A. Please be aware, both MVCS and MVSD are still exploring the "big picture" ideas. If we agree to move to the next step, we will begin having discussions about the more specific details of a partnership (ie: governance, staffing, enrollment policies, facilities and the like).

A Letter to the Older Crew
Hello Older Crew-
Proud does not even begin to describe how I feel about how you all worked during our "adventure" on Friday.
You know, during this year, when I've told people about the things I've done with my crew (you!) - dissecting fetal pigs, chemistry experiments, planning camping trips, first aid training, orienteering in the mountains, horseback riding, public presentations, truly independent learning, high angle rescue, (and the list goes on) - they cannot believe that a group of 10 to 12 year-olds can do those things. But, you can! And, you have! I truly believe in all of you.
Friday was a great day with all of you. Despite the inclement weather and the very challenging tasks, you all persevered. You took great care of our victim from start to finish and you all did the work without complaint. More than that, you really worked diligently and tirelessly, even when the tasks were very demanding. As some of you mentioned in closing circle, this activity was "serious." It was, and I was tremendously impressed with how you handled yourselves in that serious situation and what great care you took of each other.
It is really a privilege for me to be your teacher. I respect you all so much! Thank you for a remarkable day.

Lyons and tigers and bears, OH MY! Local artist/author and fantastic storyteller, Erik Brooks, is visiting us today.....inspiring the Middle Crew to create illustrations for their self-published stories.
Crew members are enthralled, mesmerized by the images in Erik's books, drawn in by his enthusiasm, fun attitude and interest in their work. Wheels are turning, ideas forming and kids excited to put pen to paper.

The merry month of May is hustle and bustle as we scramble to pack every last bit into a great year of learning and fun. Mark your calendars for the graduation and year-end celebration on June 10th at Perrygin Lake (weather permitting).
The hiring committee has been busy meeting, observing and interviewing prospective new staff members - what a fantastic pool of applicants we've been graced with. We are sad to see our old friends moving on, but excited too, by the opportunities to get to know new people in the community.
Anyone interested in knowing more or showing their support for the proposed partnership between MVCS and the local public school district, please join us for a presentation and Q&A session on May 12th, 3:30pm in the Methow Valley Elementary library.

Spring has sprung and the sunshine and warmer temperatures have blown the doors of the school wide open to welcome in the awakening earth. Students are full of energy, excited to greet each day with renewed enthusiasm.
The Younger Crew ventured to the Winthrop Fish Hatchery today to delve deeper into their study of Native American culture and history; in particular the relationship between indigenous people and salmon.
The Middle Crew - buzzing about the news that their beloved teacher, Hana, is expecting a baby in September, have been busily researching how, when and where to release their young salmon.
The Older Crew walked to Winthrop Physical Therapy for a second day of muscle strength testing with Pete Dickinson, as part of their year-long study of the human body.
This is a busy month for parents and board members as we prepare for and execute the two major FUN(d)raisers of the year - lots of money to be raised in support of the MVCS scholarship fund. We hope everyone will join us at the Winthrop Barn on Saturday, March 13 for Dolly & the King Casino Night.....we promise a fun evening for all!
